How to take and dose psilocybin mushrooms?
More and more scientific reports are discussing the properties of psilocybin mushrooms. Species found in many regions of the world contain substances considered psychedelic, but they have a broader spectrum of effects than just intoxicating. However, the effects depend not only on the presence of specific organic chemical compounds, but also on their dosage. As numerous studies indicate, this can be beneficial, especially for people struggling with depression, PTSD, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, to maintain safety, it is important to know how to take and dose preparations obtained from such mushrooms, a fact best understood by mycological researchers. If you want to learn more about this topic and understand the dosages used in tests, read the article below.
Psilocybin Mushrooms – an Increasingly Widely Researched Gift of Nature
Psilocybin Mushrooms are a group of different species, often distant from each other, united by one thing – the presence of psilocybin. This substance affects the prefrontal cortex, responsible for, among other things, perception of reality, mood, and cognitive functions. The effects obtained depend on the dose used in the tests. Some test subjects, for example, may begin to perceive the world around them differently – from changes in colors and shapes to a sense of detachment (derealization). However, smaller doses, as indicated by researchers from Johns Hopkins University and others, can improve mood and alleviate symptoms of depression – and this in the long term.
In what form are psilocybin mushrooms administered?
In professional research centers, specially prepared substances obtained from psilocybin mushrooms themselves are most often administered. Therefore, carefully calculated amounts of this substance are used. However, some choose to test this chemical compound themselves by taking individual species, either dried or fresh. It should be remembered that both the cultivation of fruiting bodies, among others, is not a problem. Psilocybine Cubensis, as well as its distribution, is illegal in Poland. Trade is permitted only in grow kits (for the purpose of observing its colonization under a microscope) or by research centers with appropriate permits conducting psilocybin research.
Why is the method of administration of these mushrooms important? It all depends on the content of the main active ingredient per gram. Fresh mushrooms, due to their higher water content, are heavier, so home-grown researchers take more of them to achieve the desired effect.
It’s important to note that such individuals also choose different methods of using psilocybin mushrooms. This also determines the speed of action of the substances contained within them. When consumed after a meal, they produce effects after about 1-2 hours. If the subject is fasting, it takes 30 minutes. Decoctions, however, work much faster because the absorption of psilocybin is increased. The first results usually appear after about fifteen minutes.
What doses are used for psilocybin mushrooms?
Such differences require appropriate calculation of the psilocybin content in 1 gram of mushrooms. It’s important to remember that these are only estimates, as the fruiting bodies can accumulate varying amounts of this substance, depending on, among other factors, the conditions in which they grow. However, it is assumed that amateur testers divide the doses into three basic doses, presented in the table below.
| Dose/Method of administration | Fresh mushrooms | Dried mushrooms |
| Low | 2.5-10 grams | 0.25-1 gram |
| Medium | 10-25 grams | 1-2.5 grams |
| High | 25-50 grams | 2.5-5 grams |
Furthermore, there are two types of doses – micro and heroic. You will find more about them later in the article.
Micro Dosage
Micro dosing usually refers to mushrooms used in minute quantities, intended to enhance mood and achieve a less than optimal effect of psilocybin. Therefore, this dose is approximately 0.5-1 gram of fresh mushrooms. The form of administration in this case (if the specimens are still fresh) doesn’t matter much. However, if the tester is using dried mushrooms, they usually choose a 10% low dose. Homegrown researchers themselves usually report that this amount of mushrooms slightly increases awareness of the surrounding world and sensitivity to stimuli, and can also aid creative thinking.
High Dosage (Heroic)
The heroic dose is quite different. These are often very high amounts of psilocybin mushrooms, which can produce highly unexpected effects. Above all, those testing the effects of such species do not recommend them to inexperienced individuals. The “heroic” amount of Psilocybine Cubensis is 5 grams of dried fruiting bodies, which is the absolute upper limit of dosage. It’s important to remember that the effects of using such a large amount include not only a potential mood boost and increased sensitivity to stimuli, but also various possible negative consequences, including vomiting, changes in body temperature, seizures, and other symptoms, commonly known as a “bad trip.”
Safety is paramount!
Please remember that psilocybin is a narcotic drug, which is considered illegal under Polish law. Therefore, the above content is for informational purposes only, and any cultivation and distribution of species producing this substance is prohibited. Additionally, it’s important to remember that testing psilocybin at home can be dangerous, while in professional laboratories it is performed under the watchful eye of qualified specialists.
