Psychedelics are experiencing a renaissance, at least in terms of their testing by scientists. They are seen as potential allies in the fight against various mental ailments, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addiction. The effects of this compound depend on many factors, including the individual predispositions of the person being tested. And how long does psilocybin last? How long does psilocybin stay in the body? I will discuss these issues, among others, in the following article. I encourage you to read it.
When does psilocybin start working?
Before you learn how long psilocybin works, you should first know what it is and when it begins to affect the body’s functions. Psilocybin is an alkaloid typical of mushrooms of the Psilocybe genus. Its structure is similar to serotonin, which is why its receptors capture it. It affects the prefrontal cortex, which influences, among other things, perception of reality, mood, and cognitive functions. Importantly, the body begins to absorb it in the oral mucosa.
This means that the moment you consume the mushrooms, this compound begins to affect the body’s functions. It has been indicated that the first effects can be observed as early as 15-40 minutes after ingestion, with the strongest effects occurring around 2-4 hours. However, this is influenced by several factors.
The first is the method of administration. For example, powdered mushrooms enclosed in a capsule work faster due to the larger surface area for digestive processes to interact with the material. The same applies to an infusion, which likely guarantees the fastest results. The effects are felt the latest when consuming dried or fresh mushrooms.
The second factor is whether they are taken on an empty stomach. If so, the effects appear much faster. This is because the digestive system doesn’t break down other ingredients, but immediately metabolizes the compounds delivered with the ingested preparation. The dose itself is equally important, as it also has a certain impact on how long psilocybin works. It’s time to answer this question.
How long does psilocybin work?
As with most compounds, including common medications, it depends. However, it is generally accepted that the average effect of psilocybin on the body lasts from 4 to 6 hours. In some cases, its effects can extend into the second day after ingestion.
As mentioned above, it depends on individual factors and the dose. Some people exhibit a higher natural tolerance to its effects than others, which is why microdosing is always used in studies. Magic mushroom enthusiasts also usually start with an amount no greater than 1 g of dried mushrooms. It should be noted that the body has adaptive abilities, so over time it may become accustomed to its effects, and therefore react less strongly and remain under its influence for a shorter period of time.
The duration of action is also influenced by factors such as:
- the user’s weight,
- metabolic efficiency,
- combining psilocybin with other substances with intoxicating or psychoactive effect,
- mood,
- the personality of the user.
What are the possible effects of psilocybin?
Again – it depends. On exactly the same factors as I mentioned above. Positive effects include, among others: Results such as:
- euphoric states,
- gaining new perspectives on experienced events,
- visions and expansion of consciousness,
- stream of thoughts.
There’s also a negative side, which sometimes happens, for example, when someone takes mushrooms when they’re feeling down or generally in a bad mood. In combination with too high a dose, this can result in, for example:
- a sense of derealization,
- a state described as “ego death,”
- unpleasant hallucinations,
- nausea, diarrhea, a faster heart rate, and other unpleasant symptoms somatic.
How long does psilocybin last in the body?
Do you already know how long psilocybin works? And how long does psilocybin last in the body? It takes about 6 hours to metabolize. The body usually eliminates traces of it in the urine within 1 to 3 days. Its presence can be detected the longest in the blood, where its markers can remain for up to 1 week. Regardless of how long psilocybin stays in the body, its effects (at least the main ones) typically last on average for about 6 hours. Headaches and other “hangover-like” reactions can, in turn, extend into the next day.
