Alcohol addiction affects approximately 900,000 people in Poland alone. Over 2 million Poles abuse it, and up to 12 million are exposed to the negative effects of its consumption. Let’s remember that we’re talking about a single substance – a de facto legal drug – ethanol. In addition, there are also addicts to other compounds and even certain behaviors, including risky sex or gambling. These are the reasons why people are constantly looking for ways to effectively combat addiction. And nature can come to the rescue. An organic substance that potentially offers some positive results and is currently under scientific scrutiny is ibogaine. However, it is associated with certain controversies. What is ibogaine?

This term refers to a complex indole alkaloid with strong psychoactive and hallucinogenic properties. Iboga occurs naturally in the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga – a plant growing in West Africa and used there in various rituals (especially among members of the Bwiti tribe). At the same time, it is one of the organic compounds seen as a potential ally in the fight against addiction. At the same time, the effects of ibogaine are somewhat controversial, which will be discussed further in the article.

What effects does ibogaine have?

In reality, ibogaine is still a compound little understood by scientists. However, we have a wealth of evidence indicating its mechanism of action. Primarily, it affects the central nervous system (or, more precisely, its metabolite, noribogaine). It acts on opioid receptors (including kappa-opioid receptors). It also exhibits an affinity for serotonin receptors, resulting in strong hallucinations and psychoactive effects (some experience suggests these are severe and prolonged, lasting up to 24 hours). It also affects NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors. This, in turn, may mean that it contributes to the building of new brain patterns over old ones. In other words, it potentially stimulates brain neuroplasticity. It also has an effect on the dopaminergic system, restoring natural dopamine production in the central nervous system.

Ibogaine in the Context of Addiction Treatment and Other Conditions

These mechanisms lead scientists to see the potential for using this compound in the fight against addiction. The effect on opioid receptors can reduce the withdrawal symptoms associated with opioids such as heroin or morphine. In turn, the effect on the dopaminergic system, whose function is severely disrupted in addictions, potentially restores proper dopamine levels, which also potentially facilitates quitting addictions. Stimulating brain neuroplasticity is crucial. This process helps create new patterns and eliminate old ones, allowing someone recovering from a given addiction to develop positive patterns and habits. This, in turn, is a crucial factor in overcoming any addiction problem.

Studies conducted with ibogaine show that the results of its use in people who have been addicted to, among other things, from:

  • heroin,
  • cocaine,
  • alcohol,
  • nicotine,

were simply spectacular. Visible and significant effects were observed after a single dose. Not only does it reduce the unpleasant effects of withdrawal, but it also reduces the risk of relapse. Simultaneously, in June 2025, the results of a study conducted at Stanford Medical University on the use of ibogaine for mental disorders, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety, were published. According to the results, brain damage resulting from events that caused these disorders was reduced.

There is one obstacle that hinders its treatment. Ibogaine is a controlled and illegal substance in Poland and the US, even for medical use outside of approved research. This is due to the fact that this compound also exhibits cardiotoxic effects, potentially causing heart rhythm disturbances. Therefore, it is usually used for treatment in countries where regulations are not as strict.

Is ibogaine available?

Many people familiar with the topic of addiction and wanting to overcome their addictions wonder where to buy ibogaine. It’s important to remember that it is illegal in our country. Therefore, it is most often purchased on the black market or in countries where its use has been officially approved. However, in such cases, the price of ibogaine can be quite high due to its origin and limited access. Additionally, black market sources are often unreliable and may provide preparations with unknown ingredients, potentially more dangerous than the original substance.

Ibogaine in Addiction Therapy – Summary

Although it has been illegal in Poland since 2012, scientists are increasingly raising the issue as a potentially effective treatment for various addictions and more. Hyperreal, a Polish forum dedicated to various substances, provides reliable applications and comprehensive information about the ibogaine compound. It is worth noting that researchers from various centers are still working to develop iboga derivatives that would be safe for medical use. It’s worth noting that in Europe, therapy using this compound is conducted in countries such as the Netherlands.
